Hollow Knight is a 2D action-adventure game developed and published by Team Cherry. Released on 24 February 2017, it is set in Hallownest, a ruined kingdom of insects beneath the town of Dirtmouth. The game combines hand-drawn visuals with exploration and combat against a large roster of enemies.

Combat and movement rely on tightly tuned 2D controls. Players dodge, dash, and slash through opponents, and gain new abilities such as spells, flight on ethereal wings, and a fiery Soul attack as they progress. Equippable charms, described as ancient relics with unusual powers, allow players to shape how they approach the game.

The world is a large, interconnected map of caverns, ancient cities, overgrown wilds, and deadly wastes. Progression is non-linear, so players choose which paths to take and which enemies to face.
